1920 Auction of the Earl of Warwick’s land and properties – A. Young (Rent 5s 1d per week). Lot No. 101a comprising of Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 Maynard Terrace.

Fifty-six cottages in Maynard Terrace were lotted in groups of three, four, and five but as there were no offers the auction closed and negotiations took place privately for the houses. Several of them together with some of the other lots were withdrawn, were disposed of, and negotiations are proceeding in regard to the others. It should be stated that all the properties are occupied and none of the tenants are under notice to quit. [Bristol Times and Mirror, 27 August 1920].

Inquest Adjourned

An inquest on Mr. Arthur Young (83), of 1, Maynard Terrace, Clutton, was opened at Radstock on Tuesday. The Coroner for North Somerset (Mr. H. A. Horner), adjourned the inquiry after taking evidence of identification.

Mr. Young, a retired colliery deputy. died on Saturday.

Mr. Arthur Dennis of South Villa. Winterfield, Paulton, said his father started work in the local collieries as a boy and had worked at Greyfield, Clutton and Pensford Collieries. He gave up work in the pits in 1939, but did other jobs until 1953.

Loss to Clutton – Death of Mr. A. Young

Clutton has lost an old and respected resident by the sudden death of Mr. Arthur Young, of 1, Maynard Terrace, on November 15. He was a native of the neighbourhood, where he had resided all his life, including the latter 50 years at Clutton.

For the greater part his working life, he was in the coal mining industry, and was a colliery examiner at Pensford Colliery for many years. He also worked at the former Greyfield and Clutton collieries.

He was a devout Methodist, and for many years a regular at High Littleton Methodist Church, where he took an active interest in its relations and social life. He was also Sunday School Superintendent there for a long period of years.

He leaves a widow and two sons and two daughters.

Mr. L Hebert, of Clutton, conducted the funeral service, at Clutton Parish Church. on Thursday last week.

The family mourners were : Lawrence and Dennis (sons); Harry Young, S. Wales, (brother); W. Clark (son-in-law); W. Davis, W. Perry, Harold Young, H. Biggs, J. Best, Ford, W. Dunster, S
Porter, P. Evans, J. Mower.

The bearers were four grandsons, Gordon Clark, Arthur Taviner, Brian Bidwell. and Dennis Kemp.

No women relatives attended the service, and there no flowers, by request.

The widow and family desire to thank all kind friends and relatives for messages of sympathy.
