George Oram Webb, veterinary surgeon of Glastonbury, was summoned for driving a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public at Glastonbury on January 23rd, last.
[Statements from the prosecution and several witness statements omitted.]
Carl Parfit, 29, Maynard Terrace, Clutton, Bristol, employed by Messrs. Maggs, of Clutton, said he was driving from Shepton Mallet to Glastonbury. The lorry as loaded with coal. As he approached Bere Lane he noticed a man leading a horse, He saw a Four Seater Singer car emerge from Bere Lane. It was only five yards from him when the car came out of Bere Lane. The car crossed the road and mounted the pavement. The car was being driven at a dangerous speed. Witness said he pulled up immediately. He noticed the lady walking on the pavement. The car struck her and carried her for about twenty yards. The driver of the car got out and went to the lady. Witness said he stopped and went to the lady’s assistance. He asked Mr. Webb what he was doing, and he replied, “I don’t know.” He said the car shot away.
In reply to Mr. Pardoe, witness said he had 30 cwt. Of coal on his lorry. He did not hear a horn sounded. He had had a conversation about the accident with Mr. Cottle. He agreed that if Mr. Webb had not mounted the pavement there would have been a collision with his lorry. Defendant came out of Bere Lane at a very fast speed.
