Clutton Couple’s Golden Day
Wednesday was a happy golden wedding anniversary for Mr. and Mrs. William Bailey, of 3, Maynard Terrace, Clutton, for after their early morning excitement of opening congratulatory messages and receiving flowers and other presents, they were joined later in the day by members of
their family and other friends for a celebration.
July 10 also on a Wednesday, in 1907, when Mr. Bailey took his bride, Miss Dowling, to Clutton Parish Church, where they were married by the late Rev. James Mansfield.
They started their married life in a cottage at Clutton, but in November the same year, they
moved to Maynard Terrace and have lived in the same house ever
It was at the wedding of a of Mr. Bailey that the couple first met. Mr. Bailey is a native of Clutton, but his wife was born at Chewton Mendip.
They have seven children – five daughters and two sons, and all but one of the daughters are married. They also have 11 grand-children and one great-grandchild.
Their married life has not been easy, particularly the earlier part, for when they had five children to
bring up a weekly wage of £1 or £1 2s.was exceptionally good, and often it was only 15s.
"I used to throw the money on the table and puzzle it out." said Mrs. Bailey, "but somehow we managed and paid our way."
"And hard times or no. I’ve always managed to have me bit of baccy." added Mr. Bailey.
"We now have a wonderful family and they wouldn’t see us want for anything. In fact, they arranged this celebration." said Mrs. Bailey.
Both agreed that today the younger generation were having a far easier time, and Mrs. Bailey commented. "Some of them get too much money and they don’t know how to use it."
Mr. Bailey. who is now in his 74th year, worked as a coal miner at the old Greyfield and Clutton
collieries, but retired from the industry at the time of the 1926 General Strike. He spent another 20 years or so in the farming industry, and turned his hands to other occupations. "He always found something to do." commented Mrs. Bailey.
“Yes, and we had no 40-hour weeks in those days: it was work from dawn to dusk." reminded her
husband.
This happy couple are still very active and Mr. Bailey, who retired at the age of 66, tends his large
garden, while his wife, who is about one year younger than her husband, carries out her normal
household duties.
They have many friends who wish them many more happy years and of their together, and all of their presents they still have one to come; a holiday at Weymouth, and I hope this also will be another happy chapter for them both.
