Many Mourners at Clutton Funeral of Mr J. W. Ettle

Friends and representatives of many organisations joined the family mourners at Clutton Parish Church, on Saturday, at the funeral of Mr Joseph William (Joe) Ettle, of 30, Maynard Terrace, who died at Bath Royal United Hospital, on Monday last week.

Mr Ettle had been a hospital patient following a road accident when cycling on June 25 and the news of his death came as a great shock to his many friends in the district.

A bachelor, Mr Ettle was 66 and he lived in the same house at Maynard Terrace for over 62 years. For the past 20 years he had resided with his sister Miss Gladys Ettle.

He devoted his working life to the coal mining industry until he retired in March last year.

Mr Ettle was closely associated with and supported many village organisations. He was president of Clutton A.F.C., a member of Clutton Horticultural Society and an associate member of the Red Cross. In this connection, with a friend Mr Bert Hunn, of Greyfield Road, he bathed the male patients weekly at the Cheshire Home at Timsbury.

Many other organisations have also benefited by his services. He was a friend to many people and there is little doubt he will be sadly missed.

The service was conducted by the Rev. D. V. Clatworthy, of Pensford, and Mrs R. Bateman was the organist for the hymns. “Abide with me” and The Lord’s my Shepherd.” Internment was at Clutton Churchyard.

[Many mourners from Maynard Terrace attended the funeral.]
