“Fire Watch” Had Happy Ending
Act I. – Christmas, 1952. Among the presents which 15-years-old Richard Parfitt, of 33, Maynard Terrace, Clutton, received was a wrist watch. It a gift from his father, Mr. Clifford Parfitt, and was much treasured.
Act ll. – March, 1953. Before starting to help his father with gardening, Richard put the watch in the breast pocket of his coat, in cue it got damaged while he was doing his spell of “hard labour" on the soil. When this over. he got a nasty shock. No watch; frantic search no sign of it.
Act III – “It must be somewhere here," they said, and at last it was found. Somehow it had got from Richard's pocket into the bonfire.
Strap missing, no hands, no face, finished; or was it?
It to the amazement of father and son, the watch was still ticking! Next day it went to a watch repairer, and then to the makers. with a letter explaining its adventures.
Act IV. – Some days ago. Postman's knock; parcel from the makers; a new watch a letter expressing the hope that it would give same satisfaction as his previous one had.
Tailpiece: Next time Richard goes gardening his watch will be left in safe place indoors.
