In Search of Conies
William Parsons and Frederick Smith, coal miners, of Maynard Terrace, Clutton, were summoned for an alleged trespass in search of conies on land in the occupation of Mr. H. G. Gibbons at Clutton on September 13. Both defendants pleaded not guilty.
William Lister. game keeper stated that at 10 a.m. on the day in question he was crossing Mr. Gibbons' field in parish of Clutton when he saw the two defendants under a hedge. Witness got to within 50 yards of them when they ran away. When he saw them first they had just started digging with a spade. Going up to the place where he had seen them digging he saw signs of recent digging. There was a rabbit hole there and in it were two small Yorkshire terriers. Defendants had run off with the spade, but left the dogs there in the hole. and after some considerable trouble one of the witnesses managed to catch one of the dogs. Some time afterwards the two men came out of their homes and owned the dogs. He knew the defendants who had previously been cautioned for the same thing, and he also knew where they lived.
Despite the fact that both defendants pleaded not guilty they had nothing to say, and were each fined 7s. 6d and 3s. 3d. costs.

Gun Mystery at Clutton
A painful sensation was caused in the district of Clutton when it became known that as the result of a gun accident, a middle aged resident, named William Parsons, a coal miner, of Maynard Terrace, has met with his death. It appears that a neighbour was in the act of unloading a gun when by some means the weapon was discharged. Parsons, who was standing close by, received the contents of the gun in the neck, death was apparently being instantaneous. Dr. Martin was immediately summoned, but he could only pronounce life to be extinct. The deceased, who leaves a widow and nine children, was well known in the district, being a member of the local District Council and also of the local Food Control Committee. He was also the workmen’s representative at the Clutton Colliery. An inquest will be held today.

Clutton – Shooting Tragedy
A painful sensation was caused in the district of Clutton when it became known that, as a result of a gun accident, a middle aged resident named William Parsons, of Maynard Terrace, had met his death. It appears that a neighbour of his, named Box, was in the act of unloading a gun, when by some means the weapon was discharged. Parsons, who was standing close by received the contents of the gun in his neck, death apparently being instantaneous. Deceased, who leaves a widow and nine children was well known in the district, being a member of the local District Council, and also of the local Food Control Committee. He was also the workmen’s representative at the Clutton Colliery where he was employed.
[There were two families with the surname of Box living in the Terrace in 1918, when the shooting occurred. One at number 14 and one at number 38. I am assuming the person responsible for William Parson’s death was George Box as he was the closest neighbour.]
