Lorry Driver Fined

Albert William Ettle (19), lorry driver, of Maynard's-terrace, Clutton, was summoned for driving a motor lorry without reasonable consideration for other road users. He was represented by Mr. H. J. Hurford and pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting. Mr. R. W. Young. said the case arose from a collision between defendant's lorry and a car near the Lydeard St. Lawrence turning on the Minehead road. Defendant, coming from the Taunton direction. passed some children on the bend, collided with the car, and then hit a telegraph post before stopping. The collision occurred on the point of the bend, and defendant’s lorry was then on the wrong side of the road.

The car driver, Albert Edward Bulpin, Sampford Brett, estimated his speed at 20 miles an hour, and
said the lorry was going at about 40 miles an hour. Afterwards defendant did not want to wait, as he said he had to reach his destination by a certain time.

Defendant, in evidence, said he reduced his speed from 25 to 20 miles an hour when he saw about ten or twelve children scattered about the road. He had to go over the white line to pass them, and was pulling back when the car approached. It seemed to skid around the bend. and the back struck his lorry. He denied cutting the corner, and said he was in no hurry.

He was fined £6 14s, including costs.
