Promising Career Cut Short – Funeral of Mr. Frederick Stevens.

The death of Frederick John Stevens at the age of 22, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Stevens, of 49 Maynard Terrace, Clutton, has removed from the village one who was always of a bright happy disposition, with a smile, kind word and helping hand for everyone who needed it. He was loved by all, and his short life was an inspiration to everyone, at home, in his school, chapel, and everyone he met.

As a lad he passed for Midsomer Norton Secondary School, and spent eight happy years there. Passing Oxford Certificate and the Bristol Higher Certificate, he went for a two year course at Goldsmith’s College, New Cross, London, passing out with honours as a certified teacher.

While at College he did not neglect the Christian side in his daily routine, but also found time to devote to cricket, hockey, and football, playing for the London University against West Ham. He then got a post at Woodend Boys’ School, where he loved his work, but came home early in November through failing health. Gradually getting worse he died on Wednesday last week.

The funeral on Monday was conducted by the Rev. J. Eade, Methodist minister, in the church, and at the graveside at St. Augustine’s Churchyard.

The principal mourners were : His mother and father, Mrs E. Horley (sister), Mr. Ken Stevens (brother), Miss Clara Stock (sweetheart), Mrs. Ivy Parsons, Mr. and Mrs. G. Summerhayes, Mr. and Mrs. F. Nash and Mr and Mrs. E. Nash (uncles and aunts).
