Among the many presents received was a mahogany clock given by the Directors of Messrs. INFORMATION (From Joyce Hurn)

Pastor Lionel & Mrs Gertrude Herbert.

Mrs Herbert was born in one of the cottages at Bendals Bridge. There was a stream at the bottom of the garden & every morning her father would go & fill a couple of buckets with water, this being their only supply. They later moved to Greens Brook.

Mrs Herbert’s brother was brought up by an Aunt living in the village. This was a common practice years ago. My own Aunt was sent from London to Bristol to live with a relation who had no children. No I.V.F. in those days.

Gert as she liked to be called attended Sunday school at the Congregational Church & when old enough became a teacher then organist. She met Lionel in 1935 when he came to preach at Clutton. She worked for many years as a cashier in Bristol & then became secretary at Clutton School.
Lionel had been a lay preacher since the age of sixteen.

During the recession in the ’30s he moved to London to find work & there he became associated with Lax of Poplar, a well‑known evangelist at that time. On his return to the West Country he lived in Bristol for a time & through his Uncle became fully involved with the work of the Bristol Congregational Lay Preachers Association, a body of itinerant preachers serving the country churches around Bristol.

He then became Pastor of Clutton Congregational Church in 1958 & remained there for many years before becoming Pastor of Zion Church Bristol for 16 years.
In 1947 Gertrude & Lionel married & moved into 7 Maynard Terrace. Two kinder & more Christian people you could not meet & I should know as my husband Walt & I lived next door.

One Sunday morning a few weeks after we moved in, a knock came on the back door. Walt answered it & there was Mr Herbert standing with his hand held out. When Walt put his hand out Mr Herbert dropped his car keys into it. “There you are” he said “take Joyce for a drive. I’m not preaching today so I don’t need it.” He had only had it a few weeks, there are not many people who would do that.

Mrs Herbert lived all her 92 years in Clutton & I am sure there are people that remember her.
