Clutton Brewery

"When first built it was intended for a silk mill, but was never used as such, being taken over by a Mr. Green who carried on brewing for some years. Mr. Richard Lewis then took it over, and he and his sons carried on until World War I when they closed down. The family also had another business at Cathay in Bristol.

Clutton beer was quite famous. A lot of Bristol people preferred it to Bristol beer, and many a load was taken to that city. Visitors from London have been known to take some back with them."

The Clutton Brewery calls for comment. It was owned by Richard Lewis. The brewing portion, apart from the commodious residence, occupies a large area, and is of considerable height. A number of men were employed. The water used in making the beer, ale, and porter, was obtained from a spring in the adjoining field. The building was erected in 1815, says Mr. Blacker, and to be used as a silk factory.

When the Clutton Brewery was in its heyday of prosperity, its well known “Trade” label could be seen in the windows of many public houses in the villages and in Bristol, worder, “Lewis’s Clutton Beers and Porter.” At this period most Public Houses were private property, and the Landlord could choose whose beers he may sell.

Richard Lewis, senior, was a keen business man. He and his family attended the State Church. He died September 21, 1882, aged 74. The business was then carried on by the elder son, Richard L. Lewis, until closed down. There were two other sons and six daughters. One married Mr. Adams of the Foundry Works, Bristol. The Brewery premises are still void (1921).
