Odd Facts

Fireplaces in Maynard Terrace

I heard the following statement regarding the fireplaces installed in the houses in Maynard Terrace - The Earl of Warwick commissioned a firm to manufacture cast iron fireplace surrounds for all the houses in the Terrace. He stated that the figurehead, just below the mantlepiece, should be based upon his wife Daisy Maynard. Due to "modernisations" many of these fireplaces have been removed; but a few remain. The similarity between the figurehead and the photograph of Daisy Maynard can be seen the the photographs below.

Mr Wally Maul [lived in Maynard 1945 to 1980], of 27 Maynard Terrace, Clutton, has an unusual cucumber plant, which local gardeners describe as a “freak.”

It has grown to about 8ft in length with a stalk of about 2½ in and has nearly 100 cucumbers on it, with promise of more to come.

Mr Maul grew his plants from “Telegraph Improved” seed and this was the weakest plant.

“I buried some nettles in the corner of the greenhouse and put the weedy looking plant in and I have given it nothing but water since,” he said.

Temple Cloud Petty Sessions

Tom James, coal miner, of Maynard Terrace, Clutton, was charged with stealing two cabbages, value 6d, the property of James Doman, and growing in a field at Clutton. Constable Summers said in consequence of thefts from the field in question he was watching there at 11:30 p.m. on September 20th, and he saw defendant in the field. He pulled up two cabbages and carried them away. The constable subsequently accosted him, and took him into custody. Defendant pleaded guilty, and expressed sorrow for his offence. The chairman said there was no excuse for a man like defendant, who was earning good wages as a miner, committing such a paltry theft. It was not like a poor person who was in distress. Defendant would be fined 10/- and costs.
