This property was also used as a Barbers Shop which had a cigarette machine. The one on the top right of the slope was Bill Frances’ men’s hairdressing shop, often run by his home trained nephew Lloyd. In 1921 Census “Bill was a Coal Hewer at Pensford and in the 1939 Register he is recorded at being a Barber. He lived in Maynard from 1918 until 1961.

Sid Hall had a bicycle repair shop in an old shed. Sid lived in Maynard from 1945 until 1974.

There was a fish and chip “shop”. Actually the food was collected in Bristol in a motorcycle and sidecar by George Box [1914 to 1934], reheated in the oven of the coal fired range, and folk in the terrace were able to have a Saturday night treat.
